Convenience retailer Centra announced today its intention to open 20 new stores nationwide, resulting in the creation of 500 new jobs in the current year. This expansion, part of a €27 million investment initiative by the Musgraves franchise brand, will also involve the renovation of 40 existing stores. The Centra convenience store network, comprising 496 stores throughout the country, reported sales of €2.1 billion in the previous year, reflecting a 6% growth compared to 2022.
Centra reported that its robust growth was driven by strong performances in core categories such as on-the-go breakfast and lunch, convenience meals, and Frank and Honest coffee. Key highlights included an 11% increase in deli and food-to-go sales, a 7% rise in bread and cake sales, a 17% surge in ready meals, and a 12% growth in its own brand range. Additionally, its coffee offering, Frank & Honest, experienced a 9% year-on-year growth in 2023, while its own ice cream brand, Moo’d, achieved an 8% increase in sales last year. Centra Managing Director Ian Allen emphasized the retailer’s commitment to evolving its offerings to meet customer needs and stay ahead in the market.
“We remain dedicated to investing in innovative and convenient experiences for our customers, offering solutions for every occasion, be it on-the-go breakfast, lunch, or dinner for tonight,” stated Mr. Allen. He acknowledged the essential role of Centra retailers, emphasizing their commitment to upholding the highest standards of convenience retailing and supporting communities in a challenging trading environment marked by rising cumulative business costs across various areas.
