Key Background:
Jaecoo is expanding its portfolio in Malaysia with the upcoming launch of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, a plug-in hybrid variant of the popular J7 SUV. Originally scheduled for release in late 2024, the launch has been delayed but remains imminent. This model will be the first plug-in hybrid in Malaysia priced under RM200,000, with an estimated starting price of RM170,000.
The J7 PHEV stands out with its efficient hybrid powertrain. Instead of the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine from the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro found in the regular J7, it uses a 1.5-liter engine sourced from the Omoda 5, producing 143 PS and 215 Nm. Complementing the gasoline engine is an electric motor generating 204 PS and 310 Nm, resulting in a combined output of 347 PS and 525 Nm of torque. Despite the impressive figures, the J7 PHEV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds—still 0.7 seconds quicker than the standard petrol model.
The J7 PHEV boasts remarkable fuel efficiency, with a combined consumption of just 4.9 liters per 100 km. Even with the battery drained, fuel consumption rises modestly to 5.99 liters per 100 km. The BYD-supplied 18.3 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides an 88 km electric range, and with the large 60-liter fuel tank, the vehicle has a claimed total range of 1,200 km. In real-world tests, the car surpassed expectations, covering over 1,300 km on a single charge and tank.
For charging, the J7 PHEV supports up to 40 kW of DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes, or use a 6.6 kW AC charger to reach full charge in about 3 hours and 20 minutes. The PHEV version is also visually distinct, featuring new 19-inch alloy wheels, redesigned door mirrors, and updated interior touches, including a cleaner door card design and revised center console. The boot offers a 500-liter capacity, with up to 1,265 liters available with the rear seats folded.
Packed with modern tech, the J7 PHEV includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, 14.8-inch infotainment screen, 360-degree camera, wireless Apple CarPlay, and advanced safety features, including autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Assembled locally at Chery Corporate Malaysia’s Shah Alam plant, the J7 PHEV will be available in three colors: Khaki White, Moonlight Silver (with a black roof), and Carbon Crystal Black, all with a black interior.
